Movie Discussion Guide: Horton Hears a Who (2008) (Digital Download)
Horton is a kind and gentle elephant who finds a tiny speck as he is taking his daily bath in the Pool of Nool. As the speck passes close to Horton, he hears a tiny yelp, making him realize that there are tiny people living on the speck who need protection. Horton sets out to find a safe place for the speck on Mount Nool. Many animals in the jungle refuse to believe Horton, and Kangaroo convinces them to destroy the speck because she thinks that Horton is ruining their way of life by believing in the speck and teaching their children that “a person’s a person, no matter how small.”
Down in Who-ville, the little town on the speck, the mayor has an equally difficult task of convincing the Whos that Horton exists and that they need to work together to save their world. When the mayor’s son Jojo finally finds his voice and joins the Whos in their noisemaking, his “yopp” breaks through to the animals around the speck, saving the tiny world from destruction. Horton Hears a Who! teaches the importance of having respect for every life, big and small.
